Chapter 33

Looking around the café, I admire the scents of fresh baked breads and sweets. Pastries, donuts, and hard candies are on display at the front, mixed among the fresh pies that the café serves.

They are not limited to only sweets though. This place has a full menu that caters to several tastes. Marie picked it out for us, and we are currently sitting in the back corner, away from everyone else. I can make out small plants and paintings around the room, but I wouldn’t be able to tell you what they are. And Marie seems more interested in watching me then explaining the room.

Smiling, I turn my attention back to my date. “What made you decide on this place?”

Returning my smile, she says, “It’s quant. I didn’t want to go with something romantic like a nice restaurant, but I wanted something more than a street cart. Now we can sit here and talk about all the things I’ve learned.”

“Speaking of learning,” I start. “What was this city called again?”

“Highpoint. I’m not sure the origin of the name, but they are known for their attractive red and silver portals. We should be able to set up a nice shop here.”

Lifting my water, I slowly take a drink. Marie watches me closely, waiting for me to continue.

“You said you have something to share about the Ashen world?”

Perking up, her smile widens. “I do! I found out why we are in a safe zone, and I have a way to increase the radius of our zone.”

“You do? That’s great!”

Frowning, she adds, “But we are going to need a few resources. The reactor that powers our bunker converts corrupted mana into pure mana. That’s why you can see so well in the bunker. That’s also why the fields are thriving despite being on the Ashen world. But we need one of these generators above ground. If I can fashion one on the surface, we should be able to power the entire town and revitalize the area. Trees will bloom again, and animals might come back.”

“Like Ashe?” I question.

Shaking her head, she explains further. “Ashe is special. He’s an Ashen that wasn’t corrupted all the way. I’m not positive, but I think he came about when the Ashen mated. They must not do it often, or else the world would be overrun with animals like Ashe.

“I’m still working on a theory for how the Ashen seem to spawn every day. But Ashe leads me to believe that they can reproduce, if only on a limited basis. But the records show that the world used to be bright and vibrant much like this realm. The sun wasn’t red, and the air was clear.

“Right now, it’s filled with corrupted mana that keeps the Ashen healthy. The trees and foliage absorb the mana and convert it to pure mana to fuel their lives. But they won’t grow, nor will they spread.”

Nodding, I ask, “But why are the buildings showing as white as well. Shouldn’t they be red if they are absorbing corrupted mana?”

Shrugging, Marie doesn’t have an answer.
